UPDATED: Accidental shooting claims Malin boy

An 11-year-old Malin boy has died from injuries suffered in an accidental shooting.

At about 3:45 p.m. Thursday, emergency services responded to a shooting in the town.

At the request of the family, the Malin Police Chief Ron Broussard declined to release the boy’s name or more details of the incident.

“At this point I believe it’s going to be ruled accidental,” Broussard said.

The boy was a student at Malin Elementary School.

The incident occurred within the city limits, and Malin is the lead investigator in the case, according to Broussard. He said officials from the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office and Klamath County Animal Control assisted.

Broussard said the weapon involved was a 22 caliber rifle. He declined to release how many shots were fired. Broussard declined to say how the child came into possession of the rifle. Broussard does not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the shooting.

Friday afternoon, Broussard said he expected to complete the investigation before the end of the day.

He said the victim’s family has requested the police department not release any more information at this time. Broussard said he plans to honor that and that the department will be selective in the information released.
